Track steps up to a bigger stage this weekend as area 1A schools compete in Albuquerque at the state meet today and tomorrow and Portales is at the District 4-3A meet in Lovington today.

“We’re very excited about the district meet, because of the way our kids are running now,” said Ram boys coach Glenn Johnson. “We’re focused on winning the districts. That’s been a goal of our from the beginning.”

Johnson already has 13 of 19 team members qualified for state so expectations are high. He says the key to doing well today in Lovington is for team members lower in the ranks to step up. He says he’ll be looking for points from second and third place finishers to make the difference.

“Those people are stepping up,” he said, citing junior Gennaro Olivas as an example. “Last week he put himself in a position to qualify for state with a throw of 44 feet in the shot put.”

Portales girls coach Ruth Chavez’ team is equally focused on not looking ahead and performing well at district.

“We want to load up and try and win at district,” Chavez said. “We’re anticipating getting quite a few more qualifiers this weekend.”

Currently one relay team, consisting of Dallas Russell, Jenna Wagner, Carrisa Swift and Sarah Christensen along with shot putter, discus thrower Jordan Roehl and Candace Bergsieker in the 100 and 200 dash have qualified.

Chavez said with jumper Wagner back from injury, her team is healthy. Johnson said recovery from a hamstring injury to sprinter senior Steven Heckert has put his team at full strength as well.

Floyd girls have won the lottery as far as qualified numbers for the 1A state meet. Coach Adam Terry will have 10 athletes competing today and tomorrow including Alexis Benoit, Prisma Davalos, Kelsi Gray, Gabby Keller, Bree Lancaster, Madeline Love, Elena Mendoza, Tori Tucker and Tana Whitecotton.

He’ll also take Leon Mendoza and Hunter Terry on the boys side.

Dora has Kayla Cox and Tearney O’Connor competing while Elida Lady Tigers Shanna Anthony and Britnie Powell have qualified.

Rounding out the area students competing at the meet are Trenton Chenault and Wesley Gilmore from Elida.
