Bosque too tough for Lady Rams
ALBUQUERQUE — A misfortunate seeding position placed the Portales Lady Rams tennis team in the path of a buzz saw Saturday.
Portales was blanked by No. 1 seed Bosque School in the semifinal round of the A-AAA State Tennis Team Championships at Albuquerque Academy.
“We got seeded pretty tough because in the second round we faced Bosque, which was the No. 1 team and champion last year,” said first-year coach Sara Bulls. “They went in and played very tough. The girls didn’t give up.”
Portales’ No. 1 singles player senior Bethany Self ended her high school career on the court against Bosque senior Molly McDevitt, the top-ranked player in the Southwest. Self had her hands full as her opponent won in straight sets 0-6, 0-6.
Self said she had a good time and wasn’t too intimidated.
“I really felt like I played to the best of my ability,” Self said. “I think we did really good. We did a lot better than people thought we would.”
Senior Kassandra Short did slightly better at No. 2 singles against Molly’s younger sister, Dara McDevitt, but lost 4-6, 2-6.
Senior Tessa Bryant lost her singles match 4-6, 4-6.
Bryant and Self lost 0-6, 1-6 to the McDevitt clan in doubles, while the No. 2 doubles team of Short and Shelby Lucero fell 4-6, 1-6.
“I’m blessed to have the group of girls I have right now,” Bulls said. “They’ve been very responsive to coaching and they’ve worked hard.”
