CHS teams win big at district meet

May 10, 2008 12:07 am

CARLSBAD — It was no contest in District 4-5A track competition.

The Wildcats ran up 120 points in boys competition, to 49 for Hobbs and 41 for Carlsbad. On the girls’ side, it was Clovis 127, Carlsbad 53 and Hobbs 33.

The girls added eight state qualifiers to their list in the meet, winning 15 of 19 events — everything except the 1,600 and 3,200, in which they had no entrants, and the two hurdles races.

“We had a real good day in the field events, and that set the tempo,” Lady Cats coach Darrel Ray said.

Clovis won all seven field events, highlighted by senior Jennifer Vaca’s school-record toss of 125-4 in javelin. She broke the previous mark held by Aimee Hilburn.

“The long trip was worth it just to get that record,” Ray said. “All the kids did a good job, and most of them ran PRs (personal records).”

New qualifiers for state included Barbara Vidal, first in pole vault at 7-6; Lainey Flatow, second in long jump at 17-1 in her first attempt this spring, and fist in the 200 in 26.06; Alexa Hampton, second in triple jump at 32-10 1/2; Haleigh Marshall, second in javelin at 101-3; Janeesha Pleasant, second in the 100 in 12.86; Tara DeWitt, second in the 200 in 27.07, and Phoebe Bruening, first in the 400 in 1:03.57.

Sophomore Antiesha Brown posted season-bests in winning long jump (17-4) and triple jump (34-0). Clovis also won all four relays, posting a season-best time of 49.68 seconds in the 400 relay with Pleasant, Flatow, DeWitt and Hampton.

The boys cruised behind senior Manuel Robles, who won all three jumping events and finished second in the 200. He also ran the anchor leg on the Wildcats’ first-place 800 relay team.

The Cats added seven state qualifiers — Brendan Williams, first in the 400 in 50.90 seconds; Isaac Edwards, second in the 800 in 2:04.16; Izzy Miranda, second in the 1,600 in 4:40.69; Zac Gerzon, first in the 110 hurdles in 15.44; David Segovia, first in the 300 hurdles in 41.44; James Howard, second in long jump at 20-3, and Jordan Mendoza, second in shot put at 46-11 1/2.

“Our goal today was to score 120 points,” CHS boys coach Darren Kelley said. “There wasn’t anyone who didn’t compete well.

“The field events guys did a great job. Hopefully, that will carry over to next week.”

CHS track squads will now prepare for the Class 5A portion of next week’s large school state competition, slated for Friday and Saturday at the University of New Mexico track facility in Albuquerque.
