Clayton sweeps Logan
The Logan boys basketball team had a difficult time containing Clayton on the boards in the Longhorns’ 65-48 loss Thursday.
The Yellowjackets (10-3) had numerous second and third chances as Logan (7-7) was unable to come down with rebounds on many possessions.
“They are a strong and physical team,” Logan coach Billy Burns said. “When actually did box out we were able to limit them to one shot.”
The Longhorns fell behind by 16 in the first half but was able to cut the lead down to nine with three minutes left in the third quarter. Logan went on the run thanks to the hot shooting of Rylan Calbert, who finished with a game high 21 points, and senior Blake Strack, who was the only other Longhorn in double digits with 12.
“We were able to push down the court during the run,” Senior Robert Bowling said. “ We were making a lot of good passes.”
The comeback was put to a quick end when the Yellowjackets scored six straight points in the first 30 seconds of the fourth quarter to push the lead back to 15.
“We committed some turnovers and they got those three quick baskets,” Burns said.
“We played lazy defense at that point,” Bowling said. “Our defense killed that run.”
Clayton had four players in double figures. Jorge Gonzalez led the way with 15 points. Samuel Overmyer chipped in with 14. Many of the Yellowjacket’s baskets came off of easy lay-ups.
“Even when they ran their offense they got inside,” Burns said.
Girls
The Logan Lady Longhorns rallied in the second half but fell short, 49-45 to the Clayton Lady Yellowjackets.
“The girls played great in that second half,” said Ladyhorns head coach Clair Rachor. “Clayton is a very tough and physical team.”
The Lady Longhorns trailed until late in the third period. The game seemed to shift in the Lady Longhorns favor as senior Jessica Aguilera hit a 3-pointer which was followed by jump shot by sophomore Nicole Collins for a 38-35 lead.
Aguilera led the Lady Longhorns with 22 points, (5, 4-5, 3), Collins followed with 16 points, (7, 2-4,0).
The Lady Yellowjackets were outscored in the third period 15-7.
Both teams played strong defense with shots often contested.
“Nobody was willing to give up the easy shot,” Rachor said. “Every shot that was made in that second half was fought for.”
The Lady Yellowjackets stayed within one point throughout the final period.
Lady Yellowjackets’ Adrienne Trujillo hit a 3-pointer to tie it at 45. A defensive steal and quick pass to Chelsea Kear put the Lady Yellowjackets up by two.
A second quick steal and pass to Cristen Taylor who scored the final points of the game with a layup for a 49-45 win over the Lady Longhorns.
“We need to play smart ball,” said Collins. “We had the game in our hands and a few mistakes took it away.”
