Boys

• Senior forward Seth Bailey scored a school-record 41 points Friday night, and Texico pretty much needed every one of them to outlast Clayton 65-54 in overtime in a District 6-2A game at Clayton.

The Wolverines (19-1, 2-0 district) host Santa Rosa in another key district clash tonight.

Texico won the game at the free throw line, hitting 27-of-36 — including 16-of-20 by Bailey — to 8-of-21 for the Yellowjackets (10-7, 0-2).

Down by six points with three minutes left, Texico went on a 9-0 run to lead 54-51. But Clayton forced overtime when senior guard Patrick Bullington, who finished with a team-high 15 points, drained a game-tying 3-pointer from just inside midcourt as time expired in regulation.

Texico, though, outscored the Yellowjackets 12-1 in the extra period.

“We played really, really sloppy in the first half,” Texico coach Richard Luscombe said. “In the third quarter we made a little run, but we just couldn’t sustain it.”

The previous record of 40 points was set by Kenny Shaw in 1989-90 — Luscombe’s first season as Texico’s coach.

Bailey and junior center Lucas Walthers scored four points each in the OT for Texico, which shot 17-of-18 from the free throw line from the fourth period on.

• Host Sudan took over the District 5-1A lead with a 43-41 victory over Farwell.

The Hornets (18-8, 7-1) went 6-of-9 from the free throw line while the Steers (19-7, 6-2) were 3-of-10, including 0-of-5 in the fourth quarter.

“If you can’t make free throws it’s hard to win,” Steers coach Shane Perkins said. “But it was a good high school basketball game, a lot of atmosphere. Both teams got after it.”

Junior guard Landry Actkinson was Farwell’s leading scorer with 14 points. The Steers, who have all but clinched the No. 2 playoff spot in the district, close the regular season at home against Bovina on Tuesday and Olton on Fridy.

• Muleshoe maintained a share of the District 2-2A lead with Floydada, outlasting host Dimmitt 56-52.

The Mules (17-10, 6-1) got three 3-pointers and 24 points from senior guard Tyson Turnbow, who went 7-for-8 from the free throw line, while junior forward Cooper Washington added 11 points.

Muleshoe plays at Floydada in the regular-season finale on Feb. 16.

For the Bobcats (9-17, 2-5), Adam Hart scored 14 points and Anthony Escarcega added 13. Muleshoe converted 19-of-29 free throws while the Bobcats went just 5-for-13.

• At Floyd, the Bronchos successfully controlled the tempo and held off District 3-1A leader Fort Sumner 27-25.

Floyd (14-5, 2-2) outscored the Foxes 12-5 in the third quarter to take a 25-20 lead. Junior forward Justin Rogers led the Bronchos with seven points while senior post Dax Moyer topped all scorers with 10 points for Fort Sumner (13-9, 4-1).

• Senior Clint Barnard led three Melrose players in double figures with 17 points in a 62-48 District 3-1A victory over Dora at Melrose. Senior Sammy Lawrence added 15 points and senior Kendall Mudgett 12 for the Buffaloes (10-6, 3-1).

The Coyotes (9-11, 1-3) were led by 15 points from sophomore Colton Gruis and 12 from freshman Dylan Privett.

• At Bovina, Olton overcame a two-point third quarter by outscoring the Mustangs 21-10 in the final stanza for a 51-42 District 5-1A victory.

Bovina (8-15, 2-6) took a 32-30 lead by posting a 14-2 scoring edge over Olton (11-12, 4-4) in the third quarter. Freshman Andrew Marrufo led the host Mustangs with 13 points, while junior Alexis Martinez scored 10.

Girls

• Sudan broke away in the final quarter and the Hornettes claimed the District 5-1A championship with a 44-26 win over Farwell at Sudan.

The Hornettes (25-6, 8-0) got three 3-pointers and 15 points from Danielle Logan and 10 from Lacee Logan. Sudan outscored Farwell 12-3 in the final period.

Farwell’s top scorer was senior guard Keegan Langford with 10 points. The Lady Blue (23-5, 6-2) have nailed down second place in the district.

“We missed a lot of point-blank shots,” Farwell coach Miles Watters said. “I basically played five kids, so I’m sure they were dead-tired by the fourth quarter.”

• At Clayton, Texico prepared for a District 6-2A showdown with unbeaten Santa Rosa at home tonight with a 64-28 rout of the Lady Yellowjackets.

Sophomore guard Jaylyn Cooper poured in a career-high 23 points for the Lady Wolverines (15-5, 2-0), who led 11-3 at the quarter and broke it open by outscoring Clayton 22-6 in the third period.

Senior guard Shannon Van Matre added 12 points for Texico. The high scorer for Clayton (11-5, 0-2) was senior guard Hannah Walker with seven.

• At Dimmitt, guard Sarah Johnson converted both ends of a 1-and-1 free throw opportunity with three seconds left in overtime to boost Muleshoe past the Bobbies 47-45 in District 2-2A.

Johnson finished with 23 points while Yvonne Gardea added 12 for the Lady Mules (9-20, 3-6). Valaria Quiroz scored 21 points and Heloise Cillie added 13, including three 3-pointers, for Dimmitt (16-13, 5-4).

• Dora rode 20 points from junior post Kelli Merrick and 18 from senior guard Tori Varnell to a 78-55 District 3-1A win at Melrose.

The Lady Coyotes (18-4, 5-0) opened a 14-10 lead at the quarter. The Lady Buffaloes (8-9, 0-4) got 14 points from sophomore Kelsey Draper, 13 from senior Amberlee Payne and 12 from sophomore Kendra Jacobs.

• Junior guard Tori Tucker led a balanced attack with 13 points and Floyd turned back Fort Sumner 53-44 in District 3-1A at Floyd.

Senior post Veronica Mendoza added 12 points and senior guard Elena Mendoza 10 for the Lady Broncos (15-5, 3-1). Junior Sarah Stinnett had 16 points and freshman LaNay Crenshaw had 11 for Fort Sumner (11-9, 1-4), and they combined for five of the Vixens’ eight 3-pointers.

• Senior guard Daniela Flores went off for a career-high 25 points, including three 3-pointers, but Bovina fell behind by 17 points at halftime and couldn’t catch up in a 69-57 District 5-1A loss at home to Olton (15-16, 4-4).

Senior Yoselin Rueda added 14 points for the Fillies (6-16, 0-8).
