Portales golfers struggle in Roswell

ROSWELL — Portales High’s golfers made improvement from Monday, but struggled overall in the two-day Spring Classic tournament co-hosted by Roswell High, Roswell Goddard and New Mexico Military.

The boys shot a four-man score of 371 on Tuesday at the NMMI golf course to finish with a two-day total of 763, good for 17th place in the 19-team field. Goddard won the tournament at 598, shooting an even 300 on Tuesday, followed by Lovington at 601 and Hobbs at 602.

Dennis Short led the Rams for the second day in a row, shooting an 86 on Tuesday for a two-day total of 174. Meantime, Jackson Powers followed a 101 on Monday with an 88 for his second round to finish at 189.

Other Rams totals included Jamal Howard 101-97 — 198, Erik O’Rear 94-105 — 199 and Sawyer May 110-100 — 210.

The girls posted a score of 406 on Tuesday to finish 12th in a 15-team field at 820. Freshman Paige Hartman had consecutive 85s to finish at 170 for the Lady Rams.

Other scores for PHS included sophomores Kelsey Prince 102-102 — 204, Gabby Espinoza 114-104 — 218, and freshmen Kaitlin Massey 113-115 — 228 and Alexa Harrington 139-150 — 289.

The next outing for Portales is on Tuesday in the Hobbs Invitational.
