Cats finish seventh at Roswell

ROSWELL — Clovis High’s boys moved up two notches to a final seventh-place team finish in Tuesday’s completion of the two-day Spring Classic golf tournament, hosted by Roswell High and Roswell Goddard.

Freshman Ethan Peterson shot 36-38 — 74 and the Wildcats compiled a four-man total of 313 at Spring River Golf Course, giving them a two-day total of 631. The Cats earned their third leg toward Class 5A state competition on Tuesday, assuring them a team berth in the event.

Roswell High shot 300 on Tuesday and finished at 599 to overhaul Lovington, which finished at 604 after taking a five-stroke lead on Monday at the New Mexico Military course.

Peterson finished at 151 for the Clovis boys after shooting 77 on Monday. Other scores for the Cats on Tuesday included 40-38 — 78 for sophomore Corbin Best (158 for 36 holes),  40-38 — 78 for junior Kyler Brewer-Hill (160), 40-47 — 87 (166) for sophomore Zach Griego and 40-43 — 83 (173) for sophomore Kyle Wornell.

The individual champion was Portales’ Donavin Sanchez, who shot a 1-under 69 on Tuesday and finished at 4-under 143 for the tournament.

Meantime, after shooting 436 on Monday at Spring River, the Clovis girls came back for a 397 total at NMMI to finish 11th at 833. Kolby Rains shot a 90 on Tuesday to finish at 191 overall.

Texico was eighth in girls competition and earned its third leg toward state, second in two days. The Lady Wolverines shot 386 on Tuesday to finish at 783.

Alamogordo finished at 669 to edge Deming by one shot for the team championship. Artesia’s Karissa Speck was the individual winner at 77-77 — 154.
