Lady Cats blank Robertson
Sophomore forward Melaya Flores punched in a shot from about 15 feet away late in the first half Saturday and the Clovis High girls soccer team made it stand up for a 1-0 win over Las Vegas Robertson at Leon Williams Stadium.
The Lady Wildcats (3-4) had other chances to score in the match, coach Shane Leatherwood said, but they were never in trouble — the Lady Cardinals (2-2) didn’t manage a single shot in the match.
“We played really well,” Leatherwood said. “We had to pull Taisha (Bosque, senior forward) early; she was really sick, and she only played about 20 minutes.
“Once we pulled her, we put a little more pressure on Melaya (to try to score).”
Bosque, the Lady Cats’ leading scorer, had four shots in the match but was able to play only about 20 minutes.”
Leatherwood said the Lady Cats could have done more damage.
“They (Lady Cardinals) did a good job of getting back on (defense against) us,” he said.
Robertson took a 3-0 win over Clovis in the junior varsity preliminary.
The Lady Cats travel to Portales for a 4 p.m. matchup on Tuesday.
Clovis sweeps Plainview meet — It wasn’t the biggest meet of the season, but CHS cross country coach Mike Hankins will gladly take it.
The Wildcats and Lady Wildcats notched team victories in Saturday’s Plainview Invitational, the boys scoring 22 points to 49 for Plainview and the girls finishing with 55 to 65 for the host school.
Most of the schools competing were on the small side, Hankins said, but he thought his people ran well.
“It’s always good to win,” he said. “This is a meet that we feel like we should win, and we ran like that. The kids just did a good job.”
Senior Colton Dant led a 1-2-3 sweep for the boys, finishing in 16 minutes, 40 seconds over three miles. Kenan Bussen was second (16:58) and Kevin Dallas third (17:05) as the Cats put all seven of their runners in the top 13.
Junior Maddie McNaughton won the two-mile girls race in 12:13.
“It doesn’t matter who (else) is running,” Hankins said. “We were here to run well, and we did that.
“It was great to see Colton and Maddie win these races. I think in their minds they just wanted to win a race.
The Cats and Lady Cats return to action on Friday in the Highland Invitational at Albuquerque, a varsity-only event.
