PHS soccer teams split at Santa Fe Prep

Records: Portales 2-2-1, Santa Fe Prep 4-0
Difference: Portales lost control of the ball after the first 10 minutes of the game when the Rams couldn’t pass the ball which set up Santa Fe Prep to score two goals. Sante Fe Prep put the game away scoring a final goal early in the second.
Difference-makers: Senior midfielder Seth Christensen scored a goal.
In goal: Senior goalkeepers Erick Ibarra and Juan Tinajero worked under goal to collect seven saves. Tinajero started, but has been trouble of late with a sore shoulder so Ibarra came in the second half.
Go figure: Christian has scored a goal in each of his last three games.
Coach’s comment: “The beginning of the game we started out controlling the ball, but then we stopped. We were getting shots on goal early on in the first half and when things started going wrong Sante Fe Prep took control of the game and scored. I talked to the team during halftime about having good ball control after that we made some adjustments We started getting shots on goal, but it wasn’t enough.” — Portales coach Brian Kirchner.

Records: Portales 5-2, 1-0, Sante Fe Prep 0-0, 0-1.
Difference: Sophomore Jenna Sievers got her third goal of the game in the second half after sophomore Shalyn Bond hit Sievers on a pass in the box for a score.
Difference-makers: Sievers scored three goals.
In goal: Sophomore goalkeeper Tayler Hammack finished with seven saves.
Helpers: Freshman Brynn Roberts, sophomore Kaitlyn Garrett and Bond each had an assist, respectively.
By the numbers: This was Sievers second game where she scored three goals in a game. Hammack got her third shutout of the season.
Coach’s comment: “I like how our defense protected the ball. We made plays in the midfield to win balls in the air and our defense was able to control the ball.” — Portales coach Traci Sievers.
