Boys

Portales (10-10, 3-2 District 4-3A)

at Ruidoso (7-13, 1-3)

7 p.m. today

Last time out: Portales beat New Mexico Military 47-42 while Ruidoso fell to Roswell High 78-30, both on Saturday.

Last meeting: Portales won 59-49 on Feb. 4, 2010.

What to expect: Portales coach Mark Gallegos said that Ruidoso is an attacking type of team.

“They want to get up and down the floor,” Gallegos said. “Ruidoso wants to score in a hurry. They spread you out and try to go to the basket.”

Gallegos said the Rams are going to play some man-to-man and some zone, but pressure them more.

“They kind of hurt us last time spreading us out,” Gallegos said. “We’ve got to run a little more zone coverage and keep them in front of us.”

Notes: The Warriors have lost four straight, with their only win in District 4-3A over Dexter on Jan. 26. … Portales has won three in a row after dropping back-to-backgames to NMMI and Lovington to start district play. A win tonight and a NMMI loss at Lovington will put Portales in second place in district play.

Girls

Dexter (7-13, 0-1 District 4-3A)

at Portales (12-7, 3-0)

7 p.m. today

Last time out: Portales beat Lovington 52-24 at home on Friday. Dexter beat Eunice 61-51 on Monday.

Last meeting: Portales won 69-15 on Jan. 30, 2010.

What to expect: PHS coach Clay Stout said Ruidoso has decent size plus a couple of guards who can shoot 3-pointers.

“They’ve got some balance on the inside,” Stout said. “They didn’t play real well against us, but then the films I’ve watched they got a post girl who can shot good from the outside.”

In the teams’ previous meeting, senior Lindsay Brown had the most points with eight for the Lady Demons.

“They are capable of putting up points, but for some reason I think our defense frustrated them last time,” Stout said. “They will be more prepared this time I’m sure.

Notes: The Lady Rams hold a two-game lead over Lovington in District 4-3A with three district game remaining. … Portales has a rematch in Lovington on Saturday in Lovington.
