Lady Cats drop pair in Onate tourney

LAS CRUCES — The Clovis High girls soccer team dropped a pair of matches in the Onate tournament on Saturday, losing to Hobbs 6-3 in the consolation semifinals and to Alamogordo 3-1 in the seventh-place match.

The Lady Cats (2-4) fell behind Hobbs 4-0 early in the second half before getting close on goals by Carrie Sharp, Ashley Gallagher and Robyn Welch. The Lady Eagles then put the contest away late.

Sharp scored midway through the first half against Alamo, but the Lady Tigers tied it shortly before halftime and scored twice late to win it.

Senior forward Taisha Bosque went down with a concussion midway through the first half against Alamo and, by NMAA rule, will have to sit out seven days.

“I think we played well and made a good showing,” CHS coach Shane Leatherwood said. “We had some good opportunities against Onate (in a 3-2 quarterfinal loss on Friday). We’re pretty little and we got knocked around a little bit.

“We had a chance to beat both teams (on Saturday). We showed we could play with Hobbs even though we gave up some early goals.”
