Lady Cats edged by host Onate in quarterfinals
LAS CRUCES — The Clovis High girls soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to Onate on Friday in a quarterfinal match in the Onate Invitational.
Marissa Polanco gave the Lady Knights a 2-0 with a pair of goals before eighth-grader Ashley Gallagher scored to pull the Lady Wildcats (2-2) to within 2-1 at the half.
Senior Taisha Bosque tied the score in the second half, scoring on an assist from Carrie Sharp, but Onate’s Corral Vargas scored what proved to be the game winner.
“We played really well,” Lady Cats coach Shane Leatherwood said. “Our shots were really good look. We hit the post once (on a potential tying goal) and had another goal called back by offsides.
“We definitely had our chances to win that game.”
Rain later Friday plagued the tournament and play was suspended until 8 a.m. today. Clovis will play twice today — a consolation semifinal and then either the fifth-place or seventh-place match.
