Clovis Christian forfeits district wins

Clovis Christian forfeited two volleyball games Thursday after discovering it had scheduled too many games, school officials said.

Principal Ivan Godwin said athletic director Greg Darden notified him of the error Wednesday night. He said CCS officials met with district and New Mexico Activities Association officials Thursday morning to report the problem.

Teams are limited to 20 regular-season matches. CCS has played 22, which by state bylaws means the Lady Eagles forfeited it last two games — district wins over Grady and House that would have given them the district title.

Clovis Christian (12-10 overall, 7-3 district) can finish no worse than a tie for second in the District 4-1A standings with Logan. District leader Grady and Logan played their final district games Thursday.

“The girls are disappointed obvious because they wanted to finish first,” Godwin said. “This has nothing to do with the athletes at Clovis Christian School. They knew nothing about this.”

The district tournament starts Monday.

Godwin said former athletic director and volleyball coach Michelle Wallis was responsible for the team’s schedule.

Wallis resigned Sept. 22 as the athletic director, Godwin said. She was relieved of her coach duties Oct. 8, Godwin said.

He said Wallis took a job with Clovis Municipal Schools but would not comment on why she is no longer the coach.

Wallis did not return a call seeking comment.

This is a great example of why Clovis Christian NEVER wins! It all starts at the top...and the administration at CC is pathetic. How do you throw Coach Wallis under the bus? It was a very small mistake. Hey Godwin, why don't you tell everyone how you relieved Coach Wallis of her duties? I didn't see where you went to the Freshman Campus during her workday as a teacher and told her there. Shouldn't that have been done in YOUR office or at a board meeting? WOW that is real professional!

If the Clovis Christian volleyball team is a good as they think they are then they won't have a problem winning in the district tournament. If I recall, Greg Darden was removed from the AD position a few years back because he couldn't handle the duties. Was that printed in the paper?? Don't recall that being printed. I never realized how PERFECT people at CC think they are, but then again their athletic teams are perfect...Zero state championships.

I am astounded that a "Christian" school would attempt to tarnish the name of a wonderful and caring coach, Coach Wallis. I have known Coach Wallis for many years and her players always come first. Ms.Wallis did indeed resign from Clovis Christian because of intolerable working conditions. This is after she had put together sports schedules and class schedules for students as the new inexperienced principal needed a lot of help. The error in-over scheduling was an honest mistake, she would never do anything to jeopardize the girls volleyball team.
She did not resign from Coaching Volleyball as she did not want to harm the team in anyway.
I have taught in high school for over 30 years I have known many AD's and coaches that have made the same mistake that Ms.Wallis made. They were not releived of their duties. So it is apparent that Coach Wallis was relieved of her coaching duties at Clovis "Christian" because Mr.Godwin did not like her.
Unfortunately for the students at Clovis "Christian" they have lost a very good (certified) teacher and an excellant caring coach. Fortunately for Coach Wallis she is now where she will be appreciated.
