The Clovis Lady Wildcats scored two first-half goals and made them stand, beating Santa Fe High 2-0 Saturday at Leon Williams Stadium.

Sophomore Taisha Bosque and junior Audrey Rodela scored for the Lady Cats (4-3), who won for the fourth time in five outings.

Bosque scored from 20 yards out after intercepting a goal kick to make it 1-0 with 14 minutes left in the half. Clovis make it 2-0 when Rodela one-time a through pass from freshman Kyra Bussen two minutes before intermission.

Clovis coach Shane Leatherwood said the Lady Cats actually played better on offense in the second half despite being shut out.

“We did a good job of making adjustments are halftime,” Leatherwood said. “We talked about instead of attacking all the time, sometimes we should drop the ball back, and swing it to the other side of the field, which opened things up.

‘We had a lot of great shot opportunities in the second half, their goalkeeper just made some great saves.”

Clovis held a 22-2 edge in shots on goal.

It was the Lady Cats’ first shutout of the season.

In Roswell, the Clovis boys lost to Ruidoso 2-0 in the third-place game of an eight-team tournament.

Earlier in the day, Roswell High beat the Wildcats 1-0.

“We couldn’t finish off our chances,” Clovis coach Greg Trujillo said. “I thought our offense would be able to score goals. As it turns out, defense has been the backbone of the team.”

Trujillo said he is considering moving players around in hopes of the sparking the offense.

The Wildcats fell to 2-6 on the season.
