Floyd dispatches Demons

BERNALILLO — After falling behind right out of the game, Floyd girls coach Adam Terry knew his team was all right when the Lady Broncos were within a point of Des Moines at halftime in Wednesday’s Class 1A girls state quarterfinal.

Still trailing after three periods, Floyd erupted for 30 points in the final eight minutes to put away the Lady Demons 65-54.

Junior guard Tori Tucker compiled 27 points, 10 rebounds and nine steals for Floyd (21-7). Senior Tanna Whitecotton added 15 points.

“We had a lot of turnovers in the first half,” Terry said. “We knew they had some of the quickest players we played against all year.”

Floyd cut down the turnovers in the second half and eventually took control of the game.

Ann Vincent led the Lady Demons (18-5) with 16 points, while Mira Newkirk chipped in 10.

Floyd (21-7) — Elena Mendoza 2 2-6 6, Veronica Mendoza 2 4-6 8, Bree Lancaster 1 4-7 6, Tori Tucker 9 6-8 27, Tanna Whitecotton 7 0-2 15, Cassie Breshears 1 1-2 3. Totals 22 17-31 65.

Des Moines (18-5) — Ann Vincent 7 1-1 16, Cassidy Doherty 2 2-6 7, Shelby Walker 3 1-2 7, Riata Rivale 3 0-0 6, Jenna Gilbert 3 0-0 8, Mira Newkirk 4 2-4 10. Totals 22 6-13 54.
