Lady Wolverines struggle at state

Texico shoots first-round score of 463 in 1-3A tourney

ALBUQUERQUE — Texico’s first state golf tournament has turned out to be a learning experience.

An unforgiving course at the University of New Mexico got the best of the Lady Wolverines, leading to a team score of 463 for seventh place after the first of two days.

Haley Raymond paced team leader Socorro (375) with an 83 to tie St. Michael’s Jamie Palermo for the individual lead.

Texico coach Kristen Scanlan said Tuesday’s focus is just to shoot better, and to look for similar courses to schedule next season in preparation.

The rough at UNM, Scanlan said, is four inches deep in some areas, and the bunkers are more abundant and harder to escape than in Portales or Roswell.

“We saw things we’ve never experienced,” Scanlan said. “Our first time at state was an eye-opening experience.”

Erin Scanlan leads Texico with 103, good for 11th.

Clovis Christian’s Lauren Douma shot 111 and is currently in 19th place.
